Ville-Marie (which is what Montreal used to be called in the very
beginning) is the oldest and the most central of all boroughs. It encompasses
the entire downtown, the Old Port area and its environs
(Quartier International and Cité du Multimédia),
le Quartier Latin, the Chinatown, the Gay Village as well as the
mountain (Mont Royal) and the island of Sainte-Hélène.
About 85,000 people live in Ville-Marie, which makes it the
8th borough of the city in terms of population. Demographics-wise,
Ville Marie has the highest concentration of single adults
and students.
