CHARACTER AND FEELPreviously known simply as the north-western corner of Le Plateau,
Mile End has been considered a separate neighbourhood for many years now.
It's a low-rise neighbourhood which is somewhat simpler architecturally
than its popular southern neighbour and doesn't have as many magnificent
row-houses.
POPULATION AND DEMOGRAPHICSMile End is proudly and almost ostentatiously mixed -
ethnically and linguistically. You'll hear English,
French, Italian, Portuguese and a few other languages
quite often. It is still home to a sizeable Jewish
community (that is why the famous
Montreal bagel
originated in Mile End).
